Homemade Microwave Popcorn | Stir & Scribble for Shop Sweet Lulu

Here’s a fast and easy idea for a Thanksgiving appetizer and a place setting in one: Herbed Popcorn.  This Herbed Popcorn is popped right in these darling snack bags, requiring one less pot to clean or burner to fill on your busy Thanksgiving day.

Herbed Microwaved Popcorn Place Setting
Yield: 1 serving – approximately 2 cups of popped popcorn

3 tablespoons popcorn kernels
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh herbs – such as thyme, rosemary, and sage
1 teaspoon olive oil – other neutral oils such as canola work well too
½ teaspoon kosher salt

Pour the popcorn kernels, herbs, olive oil, and salt in the paper snack bags. Fold down the top of the bag 1/2 inch and shake to combine. Fold down the top of the bag once more and put a staple on each end of the fold.  If you’re nervous about the staples in the microwave know this: two staples spaced on opposite ends of the bag is not enough metal to conduct microwaves and heat the metal.  Microwave the bag, standing upright for 1 to 2 minutes or until the popping slows.

Wrap the bags of popped popcorn in twine and attach a gift tags with each guests name and viola! Place setting and appetizers in one sweet little package.

This is also a great trick to know for rainy weekends or family movie nights – you can use almost any paper bag for this including these sweet vintage popcorn bags! The bags can be filled and sealed up to 24 hours in advance.

  2. Such a cute and clever idea! I've never tried this method before...so the oil doesn't seep through the bag, especially if you prep it ahead of time?

This will definitely not help my popcorn addiction. :)

    1. Hey Lisa! Great question - its such a small amount of oil and these Shop Sweet Lulu bags are so sturdy that I didn't have any problem with seeping. I did get oil spots on the bottom of the brown paper lunch bags I tested too - not a ton, but some. Hope that helps.
